Curriculum: What we use

The curriculum we use:

When we first decided to home school, I requested catalogs.  I asked everyone I knew what they used and I ordered the catalog.  It wasn’t long until I was swimming in a sea of curriculum sharks.  I can’t even say it was fish, because these suckers would BITE.  *chomp*  I was absolutely overwhelmed.

How could anyone ever choose?  What if I chose the wrong one?  The education of my children depends on this ONE decision…I couldn’t afford to mess it up!  There were several different publishers that appealed to my learning style.  That was awesome, but what if that’s not how my kids learn?  What if I can’t teach them?  The doubt had started and I hadn’t even ordered the first book yet.

After MUCH deliberation and agonizing, we decided  — we would order from Sonlight Curriculum.  I will gladly admit that we are very blessed.  Despite the yearly debate about grass on the other side and how green it is, we have stuck with Sonlight, and are very satisfied with the quality education that our kids are receiving.

There are some things that we use that are not Sonlight, too.  To give a quick list, those include:

  • Apologia Science
  • Horizons Math
  • Singapore Math
  • Sequential Spelling (although it is part of Sonlight Language Arts 3)
  • Handwriting Without Tears
  • A Reason for Handwriting

I have been very surprised by some of the things that the kids like and don’t like and it just reinforces that every child is different!  It also reinforces that homeschooling works!

I should also mention that Sonlight has a Rewards Program I enjoy. If you decide to purchase from Sonlight, enter my Rewards ID when you register an account on their site and you’ll get $5 off your first order ($50 or more). I’ll get points that I can redeem at another time.
