Week of Christopher – Day one

May 3, 2014

It’s so hard for me believe.  13 years ago, I was eagerly waiting for my first labor to kick in.  I had no idea what to expect and in the couple of weeks leading up to his birth, we rushed to the hospital thinking things were starting.  On Wednesday of this week, Christopher – my oldest – turns 13.  He’s turned into a man this year.  Not really a man, but he’s not a little boy either.  He’s 6′ 1″ or maybe it’s 2″ now, and he looks less and less “little” every day.

So, I’m going to post some old pictures for a week and cry in my tea about how my baby is getting all grown up and don’t need me anymore…mostly because it embarrasses him.  Isn’t that my job?  Well, one of them anyway.

This first picture of Christopher is one of my favorites.  He was such a big baby.  At birth he was 10 lb, 14 oz and 23 inches long.  This newborn picture of him…he’s wearing a 6 month outfit.  His first Christmas, he wore 2T PJs.  At his current size and growth rate, I can’t tell you that it has gotten any easier keeping him in clothes.

8 days old

I love these next pictures.  After a couple of kids were born, it was my plan to do these pictures (next to the numbers) every year for the first 5 years and then have ‘school pictures’ each year.  The place where we had these made, and I’m sure many of you will recognize them, ended up no longer being an option after a while so that plan changed.  I do especially love having them for Christopher though because his growth is so evident in them.  The numbers are all the same height, so you can see just how much he grew each year.  I can still remember him standing next to that number 1.  His outfit has a Pooh on it and I had found Pooh tennis shoes for him to wear as well.  His pudgy little legs just rolled over the top of those shoes.  I’m NOT crying…nope…not doing it.

Splish Splash – Bathing the Toddler

April 26, 2014

Splish splash
I was takin’ a bath
‘Long about a Saturday night
baby-tubA rub dub
 Just relaxin’ in the tub
Thinkin’ everything was all right

(yeah, right)

Six kids and I finally get one that doesn’t like taking a bath.  Well, I take that back.  He doesn’t mind being in the tub.  It’s more that there is soap and water splashing on him, and water, and soap on his arms, and on his feet…  He’s not wild about the washing his hair part either.  So, yeah, basically he loves just sitting in the bathtub with water, but actually attempting to get him clean turns him into a screaming banshee.

My husband tells me that if he sings “Raindrops keep falling on my head”  when the shower is spraying on Liam’s head…he’s less likely to have a fit.  I’ve yet to see this miracle happen.  Tonight’s bath wasn’t too awful.  He didn’t freak too much about rinsing his hair, but the soap on his legs was the stuff of nightmares.

I have a friend that tells me it’s a boy thing.  I don’t agree with that.  This is my 3rd boy.  The one before him loved baths.  The first one HATED being dirty so much that he’d ask for 3 or 4 baths a day when he was little.  Boy thing, no.  Liam thing, definitely.

I have found a few things that help.  We have a detachable shower sprayer in that bathroom and he likes to hold it and “wash the soap down” the drain.  That distracts him while I get him washed.  When I’ve got him completely finished, I pull the shower curtain and he gets to wash all the soap down the drain without any help.  When he’s done he usually yells “TURN IT OFF NOW!!!” at the top of his lungs.  At that point, we’re done, so he’s happy to have it over with.

He got a neat bath toy for Christmas.   It’s a boat, complete with “Captain” and several fish, etc.  That has helped a lot in terms of getting him washed up.  One of the fish even has a fingernail brush on it.  He thinks that’s hysterical.  Go figure.  He knows his colors now too.  Bonus!

I’m not even sure why I’m posting this. I guess it was fresh on my mind, since we just finished up his bath.  Also, after 6 kids, I think I was getting a little too smug about it.  People would tell me their kids hated the bath and I’d offer all sorts of advice.  Why wouldn’t I?  Five kids and they all loved it.  Yeah.  It’s good to keep humble.

If you have issues with your toddler taking a bath, you aren’t alone.  If you’re desperate and need  more suggestions, let me know.   I probably have a few more tricks up my sleeve that might help you out.  Or maybe you can help me….he’s almost three and hasn’t outgrown it yet.  Anyone have any ideas?

What is it? Revealed

March 8, 2014

Yippie!  Two correct guesses, two weeks in a row!  This week, my friend (Laura) was the first to guess correctly, so her prize will be on the way next week!  😉

What is it? Revealed

March 4, 2014

Sorry it took me so long to come back and post the reveal for last week’s What is it? Wednesday!  I KNEW I should have just scheduled the answer right off the bat.  I’ve been sick for the last week and just not had the energy to do much outside of the absolutely necessary.

I think it’s been a while since our very first guess was a correct one, but this week that was the case.  Here is our albino hedgehog!  (He’s not ours, but the girls and I were very impressed with him at our overnight at the zoo a couple of weeks ago.)

Erin – since you were the first to answer correctly…send me your address for your prize!!!  😉

Since no one was able to guess last week’s puzzle, the prize will carry over to this one.  Good luck!  Leave your guesses in the comment section!  Guess often, there is no limit.  Actually, my kids would tell you the more you guess the better you are doing! 🙂

What is it? Revealed – It’s not bacon

February 14, 2014

Wow!  You guys had some great guesses for this week’s post!  However, no one guessed correctly. I’m really wondering what type of bacon many of you eat that is pink and orange.  😉

The closest answer we got was from a friend (that couldn’t login to post on the blog) and Caleb guessed “froth”.

Here you go!  Kelsie made punch for us to have with our Thanksgiving dinner last year and it was lovely!
