Last Days of Summer

August 16, 2013

Another week gone.  It seems like every time I blink another week has passed and summer is about gone.

We have had the craziest summer.  It has rained so much.  I know we went almost three weeks with a good steady storm every day.  The kids would get up and check the weather every morning and start moaning about the rain.  I don’t blame them.  Even if we had one day in there where it didn’t rain, it was so nasty muddy and dreary outside, no one wanted to do anything.   I think having such a dreary summer made this week such a welcome blessing.  It was glorious!

On Monday, we invited a wonderful family over for some fun and to have a cookout with us.  The weather was perfect.  We had bought a thing of water balloons earlier this summer and knowing our friends were coming made it a priority to get those balloons ready for a fight!

Ever tried to fill those itty-bitty balloons they sell for water balloon bombs?  Oy.  It’s not easy.  Between them popping off of the spout, exploding just as you’d get them full, or already having holes in them before you even started…it was not the quick task my folks thought it would be.  Still, when it was time for the water balloon fight to begin, we had a semi-decent stash.  Did I mention the ones that were exploding just from the heat while they were filling more of them?  I have to admit it was funny to watch at times.  😉

Visiting Dad took the wheelbarrow around to the front yard for us, with his helpers.  I think they had ulterior motives and were looking to get their balloons first.

Once we had the balloons in place, I had all the kids back away.  Then I told them on “Go” that anyone under the age of 9 got a head start.  😉

Get ready, get set…

Once the little ones got a balloon, the big kids were allowed to take off too!

Chaos ensued!

Now, I’ll be honest here.  Between the two families there were 14 kids…ages 14 down to under a year.  Obviously, the baby and our Liam (who was napping) didn’t participate.  Even with 12 kids though, I expected a few meltdowns.  I fully expected a water balloon to bust on someone’s face (it did), or one to explode as it was picked up (they did), or something (it did) that would cause a kid to scream and cry.  They’re kids.  It happens.  Well, it didn’t.  There was one moment of tears for a very little one when he realized there were no balloons left.  One of the big kids ran and filled up another balloon JUST to let him throw it.  Crisis solved.  Dude.  If only it were always that easy.

I will say this though…I can’t get enough of those smiles.

or this one, that’s mixed with just a little bit of determination.

or little sis getting big brother…

I loved how some of my pictures caught the balloons AND the water spray.  Look at Christopher’s feet in this one.

This one may have gotten him wet too. ha!  You can see Daddy getting in on the action.

Even when they all got tired of running away and just stood at the wheelbarrow and pelted each other, they were still smiling.

So much fun!  I think I may try to do this every summer…at least once!  What a wonderful blessing to spend some much-needed time in fellowship with others.  God is so good to us!  Hope you all are having a wonderful week as well…and enjoying those last days before summer fades to fall.

    FUN! FUN! FUN!
It’s been a rainy summer here, too.

It rained yesterday, all day, just a steady light rain. A great Sabbath Day of relaxing and studying The Scriptures.

It’s still raining today, with maybe some t-storms mixed in. Guess I’d better get a move on. Gotta run to the store for a few necessities.

    Have a great week!

I like the fourth one, of Kelsie. 🙂 Your camera got such great action shots. Balloons in the air and water spray. Next year, maybe we can bring a load of water balloons over with us and we’ll have twice as many. 🙂 Thanks again for all of the fun for the kids!

Oh Julie! I am laughing so hard right now. The mental image of you guys loading up the back of your van with balloons that keep popping on you as you drive here is doing me in! Can you imagine?! ha!
