2011 in Review

April 19, 2012

I’ve been trying to come up with a way to catch everyone up on what happened with us last year, and to be honest…I’m stuck.  We were pretty boring, really.  We had a lot of fun, completed a lot of school and all that good stuff.  I guess most importantly 2011 will be remembered as the year Michele’s birthday became Liam’s birthday.  Our 7th baby was born on Michele’s 37th birthday.  Liam Eugene weighed 10 lbs, 1 oz and was 22 1/2 inches long.  It took us almost two full days to name him, but he was named in honor of his grandfathers.

and here he is now…at almost 10 months!

This was taken on Easter Sunday and since then he’s decided to take those first steps and take off running.  It is a lot of energy keeping up with him, but he is SO much fun!

The rest of the family is doing well.

Christopher is in 5th grade this year and continues to amaze us with his math capabilities.  He’s also started to improve in those pesky little areas like spelling and grammar.  It’s hard to remember he’s just 10 (almost 11!) years old, since he’s rapidly catching up with both mom & dad in height.  We never expected, at almost 6′ each, that we’d be passed up so early.  We still have a little bit of height on him though…even if he has already caught up with Andrew’s shoe size.  Of course, that comes in handy too…they can share!

Erin is in 4th grade and is really becoming a social butterfly.  She loves to be around her friends and enjoy some of their ‘perks’.  She has one friend that has horses, a few that enjoy knitting (she is learning) and recently she joined American Heritage Girls and is looking forward to all the activities that come with that.  She’s still an amazing help to Michele and loves to read to the little girls and cuddle with Liam (when he’ll let her…that’s slowing down now that he’s trucking everywhere).

Sean is 7 and has enjoyed getting to do some of his favorite things this past year, as well.  We made a trip in the fall to Durbin, WV where we rode the Durbin Rocket.  His first train ride and he was so excited!  From there we went to a family science day at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and spent most of the time doing science experiments before concluding the day setting off our own rockets.  Sean was in heaven!!  Now that Liam has gotten a little older, they like to spend time playing with trains and dinosaurs and we have no doubt Liam will know them all.

Kelsie is 4 now and still loves to sit in on our school time.  She won’t start Kindergarten for another year, but she loves being part of the hands-on activities when she can.  She loves to serve others and volunteers to help with everything.  No task is too big or too small for her.  Kelsie loves to be right in the mix with her big brothers and sister, no matter what they are doing.  She told me recently “I wish I could go back to being little.  You never rest when you’re grown up like me!”  😉

Michaela is 2!  She took a while to really get talking, but her personality definitely came through once she did.  It’s been a special treat watching her come out of her shell…although sometimes we wonder if we encouraged her a little too much.  😉  She and Kelsie are buddies and when Kelsie is helping out, Michaela is right there beside her.

In addition to Liam joining our family in 2011, we also got our first family pet.  Daisy is a Beagle/Pomeranian mix and the kids absolutely adore her.  (Andrew and I are still a mixed bag.  We love her, but she is a dog…and likes to chew…and well…ha!  You get the idea.)  We got her when Liam was about 8 weeks old and we were told that she was 8 weeks.  I started referring to them as “the twins”.  We’ve since found out that Daisy is about 3 weeks older, but they’re both still our little ones.  Daisy has brought out good things in the kids.  It’s fascinating the difference in Michaela alone.  The night we got the puppy, Michaela stood against the wall and cowered saying nothing more than “scared! scared!”  Now, she is usually the first one to dive on the floor with Daisy’s treat underneath her and hope that Daisy will attack her to get it.

Andrew and Michele are still chugging along.  We’re currently trying to build new beds for the kids’ rooms and the house is in shambles, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.  It was a very mild winter, but now that the warmer weather is here, there is so much work to do.

I know this was a ‘feel good’ update.  I (almost) left out the stomach flu, respiratory sickness, strep throat, food poisoning and a few other blessings we had this last year, but that should bring you mostly up-to-date on us.  We’re still here, still homeschooling, still loving it all.

Hope you all are well and we’d LOVE to hear updates on you!
