EAT MOR CHIKIN!

July 18, 2009

Wow.  Have you ever seen or heard a commercial and thought "Wow…how did they miss that?  What a disaster."  I think I saw one of the biggest marketing faux pas ever today when we visited Chick-fil-A for dinner.

First, let me say upfront, I LOVE Chick-fil-A.  In addition to the yummy food (I could eat there all 6 days a week they are open), I love their Christian history and community support.  This little marketing blunder isn’t going to make me stop eating at Chick-fil-A.  At the moment, I’m actually wondering how many times I can say Chick-fil-A in one blog post.  Having said that, I can’t help but wonder…what are they thinking??

Exodus 32: 7 & 8 — Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.  They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

We all know the story.  God had Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt.  Then he went up on the mountain to be given the Ten Commandments.  The Israelites felt he had been gone too long and turned back to their wicked ways.  They asked Aaron to build them a god made of gold in the form of a calf…and he did.  Poor misguided Aaron.

Exodus 32: 19 & 20 — When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

Yeah, so Moses wasn’t too happy with the golden calf.  The anger of God burned against His own people over the calf and their sin.  It’s one of those stories in the Bible that just really grabs you and shakes you, doesn’t it?

I know, I know, what does this have to do with Chick-fil-A?  Well, here’s the deal.

Chick-fil-A is currently running a promotion in their kid’s meals with collectible Chick-fil-A cows as the toy for the kids.  Kids love cows, right?  Especially a cute little figurine that says things like "Got Chikin?" and "WELKOM TO CHIKIN COUNTREE" and "CHIKIN IS BRAIN FOOD."  All wonderful saying that make my adorable children laugh.

During this promotion, inside your Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meal, you’ll find a little bag with a collectible cow.  The bag is black, so you can’t see which cow is hiding in there for your entertainment (and to see if you are getting a duplicate cow…but I digress).  Several of these secret black bags will contain a LIMITED EDITION GOLD COW along with a "You’re A Winner" card so you can receive a free ice cream.

Here’s where I have to do it….

Really???

Seriously??

A GOLDEN COW???

Really??

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Deuteronomy 9:7 — Remember this and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the desert. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

Yup, and now we put a golden cow in the kid’s meal.  Someone missed the marketing mess up on this one.  I mean, I could expect it from some cow loving heathen establishment (which will remain nameless at this time…)

BTW — I only said Chick-fil-A 8 times…oops…nine.

BTW #2 — MOST Chick-fil-A’s that I have been to will let you return the unopened Kid’s Meal toy for a free ice cream…which we did tonight.  While we were eating our ice cream the two four-year-olds that I had with me (I was babysitting and only had my two little ones) started a conversation of

"But I wanted a golden calf!"

"ME TOO!!!"

At which point I said "So did the Israelites" and the people that were sitting next to us cracked up!

Oops…make that an even 10!!!

"EAT MOR CHIKIN!"

Hmmm that is one that they didn't think of! I think I and my family of 7 will pass on that one. Thanks for the heads up.

    God bless
