Was Jesus an Orphan?

May 19, 2006

We have been reading "The Boxcar Children" as our read-aloud before bed.  Last night after talking about how the kids in the story are orphans, Christopher asked if Jesus was an orphan since God wasn’t with him when he was growing up.  What a wonderful question to answer!  We talked about how Jesus wasn’t an orphan, that he did have a mother and father here on earth and the he was loved and cherished by them.  Then we talked about how Jesus wasn’t without God while he was growing up.  God is always with us.  What a wonderful conversation we had talking about all the times in our lives that God was with us.  Here is a list that Christopher & Erin came up with:

God is with us:

  • when we go to the bathroom?!
  • when we are sad
  • when we are sleeping
  • when we are playing (does God play with us too!? was another conversation on its own)
  • when we get into trouble
  • when we are all alone (which Christopher clearly explained to Erin that if God is with us then we can’t be alone.  Silly Erin.)
  • when we are eating
  • when we are cleaning the yard
  • when we are picking up are toys
  • and yes…they even agreed that God is with mommy when she’s washing dishes and doing laundry!

What amazing little things I am experiencing every day with these kids.  I can’t imagine it any other way!

Dear Heavenly Father  — Thank you for the blessing of watching my children grow and learn to love You.  I am so grateful for an amazing husband that works so hard to provide for us so that I can stay home and raise our children.  I am honored that you have entrusted them to us (although I do have moments where I question my own capabilites).  Thank you for their smiles, hugs, innocence and for their wide-eyed love of learning and of learning about you!

Forever grateful, in Your Son’s Name.  ~Amen.

Kids, they are the greatest. I remember reading "The Boxcar Children "as a child. I am a Grandmother of 8 now.

kids come up with the greatest conclusions! We love the BC around here. We borrowed it on tape a few years ago when ds was sick, and he LOVES it. he eventually earned his own copy on CD, and I am hoping that soon he will be at a reading level to read ti and the original sequels himself (he is only 6 now!)
